Musings on Organizing

And other thoughts and reflections

Do you have an organized emergency kit in your car?

I must confess, I don't have an emergency kit in my car. I live in Wisconsin - it's winter... snowstorms happen, accidents happen.  What am I thinking? Apparently, I'm not. I've lived in this state for more than 20 years and I've been lucky enough that I've had good Samaritans stop and help when I've been stuck. But, I'm sure my luck will only hold so long. Not to mention, I have 2 teenage boys driving now. It's definitely past time to get emergency kits for the cars.
So, what do you need in your emergency kit? Think things that will keep you warm, safe and nourished.
Warmth
  • Blanket - this can be any type of blanket or sleeping bag. You might consider a heat-reflective blanket (also known as a "space blanket"). This folds and stores in much less space and can be used in other ways, such as signaling or catching rain water for drinking.

  • Stocking hat - even if you normally go out with a hat on in the winter, you may leave without one, or someone else in your car may need it.
  • Gloves or mittens - Mittens will keep your hands warmer than gloves, in general. But, also pack some gloves so you'll have greater dexterity, if needed.
Safety
  • Flashlight - Be sure to pack a flashlight and extra batteries. Check it at the beginning of the season to make sure it works. Another option is a hand-cranked flashlight. This bypasses the whole battery problem. You can now get them solar powered + crank powered
  • Booster cables - These should be in your car at all times of the year, not just the winter. Also, make sure you know how to use them. Nothing's worse than getting someone to stop and help and no one knows how to use the cables to get your battery started again!
  • First aid kit - you can get kits that are ready-made and fully stocked. That's fine. You can also create your own. Be sure it includes gauze pads, adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, antihistamines, pain relievers (acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen), hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, tweezers and a thermometer.
  • Cat litter or sand - Driving on our snowy and icy roads, this is very important. These provide traction for your tires so you can get out of a snow drift or off an icy patch. I could have certainly used this a time or two.
  • Windshield brush/scraper - Most of us use these every single day in the winter, but it's always good to have an extra in your emergency kit.
  • Cell phone charger - Celol phones are great if the battery isn't dead. Be sure to have an extra charger in your kit. You could also include a power bank. Just be sure the power bank stays charged.
Nourishment
  • Bottled water - This is a must. You might consider purchasing a BPA free bottle of your own and filling it so that you don't have to deal with plastic degrading and causing issues with the water.
  • High calorie, non-perishable food - Think trail mix, protein bars, dried fruit. While not as crucial as many of the other things in the kit, you'll be very grateful if you're ever stranded for several hours on the interstate.
Now excuse me while I go and follow my own advice! Let me know in the comments if you think my kit is missing something, or if you've ever had cause to use the emergency kit you stock in your car.
